NCEA Preparatory
These days, many secondary school students are choosing Music as an NCEA subject at levels 1, 2 and 3. These courses usually have a performance component where students are required to perform music to an audience. The pieces must be "technically secure, stylistically appropriate and confidently communicated to the audience". In terms of difficulty level, the achievement standard for level 1 states that "the performance must demonstrate technical, musical, and presentation skills appropriate to students in at least their third year of instrumental study through group itinerant tuition".
Attaining a satisfactory performance standard can be challenging for many students, especially those who have not had formal music lessons prior to starting secondary school. If you are considering NCEA Music as a future subject, please talk to us well in advance if your preferred instrument is Piano or Keyboard.
